چکیده

In the reversed field experiment ~RFX! @F. Gnesotto et al., Fusion Eng. Des. 25, 335 ~1995!#, the m51 and m50 tearing modes present in the plasma are observed to phase-lock together to form a highly peaked, strongly toroidally localized, pattern in the perturbed magnetic field. This pattern, which is commonly known as the ‘‘slinky’’ pattern, gives rise to severe edge loading problems which limit the maximum achievable toroidal current. A theory is presented which explains virtually all salient features of the RFX slinky pattern. The central premise of this theory is that at high ambient mode amplitude the various tearing modes occurring in the plasma phase-lock together in a configuration which minimizes the magnitudes of the electromagnetic torques exerted at the various mode rational surfaces. The theory successfully predicts the profiles of the edge radial and toroidal magnetic fields generated by the m50 and m51 modes, the phase relations between the various modes, the presence of a small toroidal offset between the peaks of the m50 and m51 contributions to the overall slinky pattern, and the response of the pattern to externally generated m50 and m51 magnetic perturbations. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1481057#

Control of tearing modes in toroidal fusion experiments using ‘‘designer’’ error fields

It is demonstrated that a magnetic island chain formed by a saturated tearing instability in a toroidal magnetic fusion device can lock to a special class of externally generated magnetic perturbation in a stabilizing phase. The theoretical apparatus needed to design such perturbations is outlined. These special perturbations—which are termed ‘‘designer’’ error fields—could be used to control t...

Influence of energetic ions on tearing modes in a reversed field pinch

Tearing mode stability analysis in the presence of circulating energetic ions (CEI) is studied in the reversed field pinch (RFP) magnetic configuration. In contrast to the minimal effect of precessional drift of CEI on tearing modes in tokamaks, the effect of precessional drift of CEI on tearing modes is important in the RFP. It is found that the effects of CEI on tearing modes in RFP depend on...

Mode locking in reversed-field pinch experiments.

The MHD mode trajectory in the Madison Symmetric Torus reversed-field pinch has been found to obey the sine-Gordon equation. Corresponding to experiment, a perturbation analysis predicts the locations of mode locking to be at the vacuum chamber poloidal and/or toroidal gaps. The mode's energy dissipates when it locks, as shown by a decaying spiral phase-plane trajectory. Unlocked modes travel a...

Momentum transport from current-driven reconnection in the reversed field pinch.

We calculate momentum transport from tearing fluctuations in a reversed field pinch with sheared flow, considering both the effect of a single tearing mode (through quasilinear theory and MHD computation) and multiple tearing modes (through nonlinear MHD computation). A single tearing mode transports momentum, via Maxwell and Reynolds stresses, more rapidly than classical viscous forces. Moreov...

Resonant magnetic perturbation effect on the tearing mode dynamics

The tearing mode (TM) is a resistive instability that can arise in magnetically confined plasmas. The TM can be driven unstable by the gradient of the plasma current. When the mode grows it destroys the magnetic field symmetry and reconnects the magnetic field in the form of a so-called magnetic island. The TMs are inherent to a type of device called the reversed-field pinch (RFP), which is a d...
